US Leather Labeling: Composition Claims Buyers Should Verify

Before approving a US-facing leather description, check what material is used, which part the claim describes, and whether a qualifying disclosure is needed. Review the product tag and online wording together. A supplier’s material name is a starting record—not automatic approval of a consumer-facing claim under the FTC Leather Guides.

What do the FTC Leather Guides cover?

The Guides explain the FTC’s approach to representations about selected leather and simulated-leather products. They are administrative interpretations under the FTC Act, not a new 2026 labeling law.

Section 24.0 lists products including wallets, card cases and bags, alongside other categories and similar articles. This article focuses on composition wording for those accessory projects, not every labeling obligation or every market. A review of these Guides alone is not a complete legal assessment of a product.

Which material conditions matter before copy approval?

Check the construction behind the statement before deciding how broadly to describe the item. Section 24.2 addresses unqualified leather wording through its “all substantial parts” condition, along with component-specific representations.

It also addresses non-leather material that looks like leather, processing that imitates a different kind of leather, and backing that is not apparent on casual inspection or would make the composition claim misleading if left undisclosed. These are conditional situations—not an instruction to publish a complete bill of materials in every advertisement.

For the buyer, the useful question is what a reader might understand from the proposed statement and image. Mark the part being described, then identify anything in the confirmed construction that could make that impression inaccurate. If a relevant material detail is still unresolved, leave the corresponding wording open rather than allowing a designer to fill the gap with a familiar marketing term.

How should bonded-type material wording be reviewed?

Do not treat a bonded or reconstituted composition as interchangeable with intact animal hide. Section 24.2(f) provides alternative disclosure approaches when such material looks like leather: adequate non-leather disclosure, or the specified fiber and non-leather percentages when using the listed composition terms.

Keep those conditions intact. Do not turn this into a rule that every material needs a percentage label, or invent percentages from a trade name. Request the information needed to review the proposed wording. If it is unavailable, do not manufacture a composition statement merely to finish the packaging artwork.

This is not a quality ranking. It does not establish durability, environmental performance or suitability for an accessory. Nor does discussing a composite material mean that any Aarons product contains it.

How can buyers keep a claim tied to the correct part?

Review the claimed part and the consumer-facing statement together. Information about one panel should not silently become a claim about the complete construction.

For a hypothetical card-holder project, suppose the supporting record identifies leather only for the outside panels. A reviewer should then question wording that presents every pocket, backing and insert as the same material. That does not settle the final label; it identifies the scope that needs clarification before publication.

Likewise, a patterned surface and the underlying material identity answer different questions. Ask whether the proposed description names the actual material, an appearance, or both. Keep those meanings separate instead of approving a species or construction claim from a photograph.

What should the product, packaging and web teams compare?

Compare the exact proposed words and images, not just the product name in a spreadsheet. The following questions are an editorial review aid, not a substitute for checking the applicable Guide.

Composition-copy review questions for a private-label project
Review point Question for the buyer Action before release
Whole item or part Does the statement describe one surface or the entire product? Mark its intended scope on the copy proof.
Appearance and identity Is the image or wording being treated as proof of a material? Compare it with the confirmed construction.
Missing qualification Would leaving out a relevant detail change the impression? Flag the statement for wording review.
Physical and online versions Do the tag, packaging and listing tell the same story? Review complete mockups, not isolated text.
Unresolved information Has a trade name been used to fill an evidence gap? Hold that statement until it is clarified.

Where should a qualifying disclosure appear?

Where the Guides call for disclosure, consider the product presentation and relevant advertising together. Section 24.2(g) describes disclosures on or attached to the item through consumer receipt, along with clear, conspicuous disclosure near the related representation in applicable advertising.

Review a complete tag or packaging proof and the actual proposed listing layout. A note in an internal supplier file is not the same as information shown to a purchaser. Check whether the intended qualification remains visible beside the statement after the page is arranged for a phone, the image is cropped, or a short product title is reused elsewhere.

Do not assume one approved paragraph will remain sufficient after another team adds a new composition headline or substitutes an image. Assess the revised presentation and obtain specialist advice where the implication or required wording is uncertain.

What should happen before the wording is released?

Approve the composition copy as a distinct release item, connected to the confirmed material information. The process should make unresolved claims visible without repeating the supplier-document checklist.

  1. List the composition statements proposed for the product, tag, packaging and listing.
  2. Identify the part and confirmed material information behind each statement.
  3. Review applicable qualifications with the relevant Guide and US-market adviser.
  4. Approve complete copy and image mockups with any unresolved points clearly recorded.
  5. Revisit that approval if the construction or customer-facing presentation changes.

The leather material declaration guide covers the purchasing records behind this review. Here, the additional decision is how those records are expressed to the customer—not whether a document alone proves compliance.

What should an OEM buyer send with the inquiry?

Bring the intended accessory, destination market, proposed material direction and draft consumer-facing wording. Identify the claims or components that still need clarification.

Discuss the product and material brief with Aarons Leather before finalizing artwork. Project-specific construction and documentation need confirmation; this article does not promise regulatory approval. Check current guidance and obtain advice for the actual US-facing label and marketing context.
