LWG Leather Claims: Facility Certification vs Finished Products

An LWG facility certificate does not, by itself, certify a finished wallet, bag or leather accessory. Before approving LWG leather claims, buyers should check the named facility, connect the proposed leather to the order, and review the exact wording against applicable LWG guidance. Product-specific performance and compliance questions require their own evidence.

This industry procurement guide reflects public guidance checked on October 20, 2026. It does not verify certification or membership for Aarons Leather or any supplier. The checks below are editorial buying recommendations, not an official LWG form or legal advice.

What does an LWG facility certificate establish?

It identifies certification of a particular operation within the leather supply chain, rather than automatic certification of every finished item containing its leather. The supplier selling you an accessory may be a different business from the facility named in the evidence.

The Leather Working Group claims guidance distinguishes membership claims from facility certification claims. It explains that certification applies to the leather-making facility, not individual products, and that genuine facility certification marks contain a unique reference number (URN) and expiry date.

A membership statement therefore answers a different question from a facility certificate. Neither should become a blanket claim about the finished accessory. This does not mean every product-related mention of LWG is prohibited: the evidence, applicable guidance and any permission to use wording or a mark need separate review.

Which three evidence levels should a buyer keep separate?

Check the facility credential, the leather assigned to your order, and the finished-product claim as separate decisions. A document can help answer one question without resolving the others.

Evidence level What to examine What it does not establish alone
Facility Named operation, current certification details and relevant scope. That your order uses leather from that operation.
Order material Records identifying the proposed leather, its source and its use in your product. Permission to use a particular product claim or logo.
Finished product and copy Complete construction, evidence for the claim and applicable wording or mark conditions. That a facility credential guarantees product safety, performance or compliance.

This is a procurement framework, not a certification scheme. For example, a portfolio may combine a leather cover with another lining, reinforcement and hardware. Review which component the sourcing evidence concerns; do not extend it silently to the entire construction.

How can you verify the evidence before approving copy?

Start with the exact statement the supplier wants you to use, then work back to the supporting records. Keep the claim open if a link in that evidence chain is unresolved.

  1. Identify the proposed claim. Save the wording and where it will appear: quotation, listing, packaging or a buyer presentation. Separate a membership statement from a facility-sourcing statement, and ask who is making it.
  2. Match the named operation. Request the facility name, URN, scope and expiry details. Search the official LWG Certified Suppliers directory, then compare the relevant listing with the supplied evidence. A familiar trading name is not a substitute for identifying the operation.
  3. Connect the leather to the order. Ask which leather components the evidence concerns and request records linking the source, material reference and proposed order. If the supplier buys through an intermediary, ask how that link is documented rather than assuming it.
  4. Review the statement and any mark separately. Check current applicable claims guidance and any authorisation conditions. A certificate screenshot does not, on its own, give a brand permission to display a logo or select a customer-facing phrase.
  5. Record the decision and control changes. Retain the reviewed wording, evidence, verification date, unresolved questions and responsible approver. Revisit the decision when the source, component, construction or proposed claim changes, and recheck relevant status before use.

The directory is a starting point for checking a facility, not proof of this order's route. If a name, scope or document does not reconcile, request clarification. Do not fill the gap with a stronger marketing description.

Which wording should trigger further review?

Pause when a statement turns a facility credential into a finished-product guarantee, or treats membership as certification. Approve wording only after checking what its evidence actually supports.

Examples needing scrutiny include a wallet described simply as “LWG-certified,” a claim that all product components are covered by a tannery certificate, or an environmental-superiority promise based only on a supplier badge. The issue is the implication a buyer or customer could reasonably take from the statement, not just whether the supplier supplied a document.

A sourcing description also needs review; it is not automatically approved wording. Ask which components it covers, whether the records support it and what the applicable guidance allows. Where eligibility or wording remains uncertain, seek clarification from LWG or an appropriately qualified adviser before using the reference.

Does facility certification replace finished-product testing?

No. A facility credential and a product-specific assessment answer different questions. Decide what testing or specialist review is appropriate for the actual product, materials, intended use and destination requirements.

The LWG certification FAQ says certification does not guarantee the absence of restricted-substance failures in a final product and does not replace legal-compliance assessment. A facility certificate should therefore not be presented as the laboratory result for your finished accessory.

Keep any report tied to its identified sample and assessment scope. Do not assume it covers an untested lining, changed adhesive or later construction. For component identification and sample records, use our leather material declaration guide; that record supports purchasing control but is not itself certification.

What should you include in an OEM enquiry?

Include the product reference, intended market, proposed leather claim and the evidence you need reviewed. Keep the sourcing question visible before the quotation and sample are approved.

For example: “For this portfolio project, please identify the proposed cover leather and its source, state what current LWG-related evidence is available, and flag any unresolved question before we approve customer-facing copy.” This is an enquiry prompt, not a claim suitable for a product label.

Send Aarons Leather your product and material-evidence brief to discuss the project requirements. Confirm available materials, documentation, sampling and commercial terms for the actual proposal; do not assume certification or claim eligibility from this article.
