India Leather Export Data: What OEM Buyers Should Check

India's leather export data is useful for OEM sourcing only when buyers separate the reporting period, currency and product scope. Use the figures as context for questions about an actual proposal—not as evidence of unit volumes, factory costs or a required supplier discount.

The sourcing recommendations below are editorial analysis. Images are AI concepts, not real shipments or numerical charts.

What do the same-period currency figures show?

Read each row on its own unit and period. Do not compare dollars directly with rupees or treat either as units shipped.

Source: Council for Leather Exports (CLE), citing DGCI&S; India-to-world exports. This report and product table (DOCX) compare April–June 2026 with April–June 2025: India's FY2026–27 first quarter. Checked October 20, 2026.

CLE grouping / unit Apr–Jun 2025 Apr–Jun 2026 Reported change
Sector total / USD million 1,203.57 1,159.32 −3.68%
Sector total / INR million 102,966.34 109,845.77 +6.68%
Leather Goods / USD million 318.63 300.39 −5.72%
Leather Goods / INR million 27,257.60 28,459.65 +4.41%

The sector includes finished leather, leather footwear, footwear components, leather garments, leather goods, saddlery/harness and non-leather footwear—not an accessories market-size estimate. HS mapping/edition is not supplied; do not invent one.

Why is export value different from order volume or unit price?

An aggregate export amount cannot, on its own, show how many units of your product were ordered or what one supplier should charge. Treat value, volume and a like-for-like quotation as different measures.

The WTO's trade methodology notes, section 2.1.2, distinguish nominal values from volume measures; unit values are averages, not an individual SKU quotation. CLE does not isolate currency, quantity, price or product-mix effects. Do not assign the whole explanation to exchange rates without further evidence.

Consider two hypothetical quotations: one for a simple card holder and one for a lined, multi-pocket accessory. An industry total does not make those quotations comparable. Even for the same design, changing the quantity or packaging can change what is being quoted. These are comparison questions to investigate, not claims about a particular factory's costs.

How can OEM buyers use the data without overreacting?

Use the report to ask better questions, not to set a universal discount. First decide whether the period and grouping answer your question; then request project-specific evidence for the commercial decision.

For a new enquiry, the useful question is not “exports fell, so why is your quote unchanged?” It is “does this revised quote cover the same approved construction and commercial basis?” Our supplier quote comparison guide shows how to separate the terms of a real proposal.

For a repeat project, retain the earlier specification and ask the supplier to identify differences in the new proposal. A change log is more actionable than an assumption that the headline percentage must appear in the unit price. If a supplier cites an industry report as the explanation for a change, ask how that report relates to the specific item and terms.

What should remain fixed when comparing quotations?

Compare an agreed product and quantity on a consistent commercial basis. Where the basis differs, make that difference visible rather than describing the lower headline figure as the better offer.

  • Construction: the same bill of materials, dimensions, lining, hardware, logo treatment and approved reference.
  • Quantity: the same total order and relevant colour or model breakdown.
  • Money and delivery basis: quoted currency, payment terms, trade term and named place, with the included charges clear.
  • Presentation and timing: packaging, sampling scope, lead-time assumptions and quote validity.

Use our leather goods RFQ checklist to build the enquiry. RFQ means a request for quotation: it gives suppliers a shared brief so that differences in their responses are easier to assess. The fields above are a comparison framework, not fixed Aarons commercial terms.

What should go in the next sourcing review?

Keep the source and its limitations beside the buying decision. That makes the analysis reusable when someone revisits the report or a later quotation.

  1. Save the reference. Record the report, quarter, grouping, currency and date checked.
  2. State the unanswered question. Separate a market-context observation from any claim about your product's demand, quantity or cost.
  3. Request comparable proposals. Attach the same specification and commercial assumptions, then resolve differences before selection.

CLE supplies no explicit revision marker or publication day. Recheck the source before reuse; do not substitute the URL's month for a release date or turn one quarter into a forecast.

Share your product specification and sourcing brief with Aarons Leather to discuss an OEM proposal on its actual terms. The export report can inform the conversation, but it cannot substitute for a sample, specification or comparable quotation.
