Leather tote bag handles should be specified as a load-bearing system, not chosen from a product photo alone. For a wholesale order, define the carry mode, handle drop, leather and inner support, attachment construction, and a repeatable sample check. The approved sample and written specification—not a generic “genuine leather” label—should establish what the production run must match.
What should a wholesale tote handle specification include?
A useful handle specification connects the buyer's intended use to measurable construction decisions. It identifies what the handle is made from, how it meets the bag body, and how both will be checked on the physical sample.
Record the primary carry mode first: hand, shoulder, or a combination. Then note the finished handle drop, width, profile, edge treatment, color and surface reference. Define where each tab meets the bag, whether there is internal support, the stitching or hardware arrangement, and the condition you will accept after a sample carry check. Agree on measurement points and tolerances with the supplier rather than treating a photograph as a specification.
This guide focuses on the handle system. For dimensions, lining, closures and branding across the whole bag, use the separate custom leather tote specification guide.
How do leather choice and handle construction work together?
The leather name alone cannot predict how a finished handle will feel or behave. The Leather Working Group's terminology guide distinguishes full-grain, corrected-grain and split leather by their structure or treatment. It does not turn the broad phrase “genuine leather” into a complete performance specification. Ask for the proposed material, finish, thickness and temper on the actual handle sample.
The handle may be a flat folded strip, a rounded profile, or a leather-wrapped construction with internal support. These are design options, not a universal quality ranking. A soft shoulder tote may need a flexible, comfortable handle; a structured work tote may need a profile that better retains its shape. Edge paint, a turned edge and a stitched edge also produce different appearances and maintenance considerations. Approve the actual combination rather than accepting a leather swatch in isolation.
Aarons Leather's Material Lab is a starting point for surface direction. Its images are not proof of the material, reinforcement or performance of a specific order; those details belong in the project brief and approved sample.
The publicly listed structured work tote reference shows a slimmer visible handle profile and placement than the conceptual cover image. It is useful for discussing silhouette; its photographs cannot verify internal reinforcement or the test result for a new order.

Which handle attachment method fits the carry mode?
No visible fastener is automatically stronger. The important question is how the load passes from the handle through its tab, backing, top edge and body panel. Three common design routes are worth discussing with the supplier:
On a phone, swipe the table sideways to view all columns.
| Attachment route | Buyer should specify | Inspect on the sample |
|---|---|---|
| Stitched tab or sewn-in handle | Tab position, overlap, stitch pattern, inside reinforcement and finished top edge | Both sides of the joint, stitch consistency and any panel distortion when carried |
| Riveted tab | Rivet type and position, leather layers and backing piece | Whether the fastener seats securely without cutting or pulling through the material |
| Ring and detachable strap | Ring and hook specification, tab construction, backing and strap adjustability | Every load-bearing joint in each intended carry mode |
This is a buyer-side comparison, not a claim that one method has a fixed strength. An exposed rivet without adequate backing can concentrate stress; more stitching cannot compensate for a poorly positioned tab or unsuitable material. Ask the supplier to show the inside of the attachment area where feasible.

How should reinforcement be checked before bulk production?
Reinforcement is a design choice that must be defined and sampled. Depending on the handle profile and intended load, the supplier may propose an internal layer to control stretch, a backing patch at the tab, or reinforcement of the bag's top edge. Ask which components are present and how they are attached; do not infer them from an attractive exterior image.
Use a documented sample check:
- Set the use case. List the intended contents, carry mode and any market-specific test requirements. The buyer and supplier should agree on the test load and method; this guide does not prescribe a universal weight limit.
- Record the starting condition. Measure handle drop and tab placement at agreed points. Photograph the front, inside joint and top edge.
- Carry the loaded sample. Use the agreed contents and procedure, including both shoulder and hand carry if both are advertised.
- Inspect and decide. Check twisting, permanent change in drop, stitching, rivets, edge finish and panel distortion. Record whether the sample passes, requires a revision or needs a new approval round.
Material tests can supplement this check when a procurement program calls for them. ASTM's page for D2208-16(2023) describes a grab-method breaking-strength test and explicitly lists narrow strap, welt, lace and round belt leathers among its intended applications. Its page for D4705-18(2023) describes a double-hole method for stitch-tear resistance of leather, particularly lightweight leathers. Neither test page certifies a completed tote handle or attachment. Specify the test method, laboratory, specimen and acceptance criterion separately if a formal report is required.
What belongs in the handle section of an RFQ?
A request for quotation (RFQ) should be specific enough that competing suppliers are quoting the same proposed construction. Include a drawing or marked reference image, the intended contents and carry mode, target quantity, proposed material and color, handle profile and drop, reinforcement and attachment details, branding position, and required packaging. Ask the supplier to identify any assumptions or alternatives in the quotation.
The written approval should reference a dated physical sample and a revision-controlled specification. If the handle drop, tab position or reinforcement changes after approval, document whether another sample and quote are needed. MOQ, tooling, sample charges and timing are project-specific commercial terms; confirm them in the quote rather than relying on a blanket figure from a general article.
Frequently asked questions
Is a riveted leather tote handle stronger than a stitched one?
Not necessarily. Strength depends on the complete joint: leather layers, backing, fastener or stitch design, tab position and bag panel. Compare the proposed constructions on samples under the same agreed carry check. A fastener's appearance is not a substitute for an attachment specification.
Can a product image prove that a tote handle will be comfortable?
No. A photograph can show proportion and visible finish, but it cannot establish how a filled bag balances or how a handle feels in hand or on a shoulder. Check the actual sample with the intended contents and user scenario.
Next step: approve the handle system, not only the bag silhouette
Choose a leather and handle profile for the intended use, document the entire attachment path, and test the sample using agreed contents and acceptance notes. This creates a clearer basis for comparing supplier quotations and repeating the approved construction in production.
To discuss an OEM tote project, send Aarons Leather your bag reference, target quantity, carry mode, intended contents, material and branding direction, and any required tests through the B2B enquiry page. The team can review the specification and confirm what is feasible for the actual order.
